India blocks millions of Cell phones

India asked Cell Phone Operators to block Millions of Indian Cell Phones. The ban is restricted to Cell Phones with no valid unique Identification code, reports BBC. It is basically termed as International Equipment Identity (IMEI) number which is a 15 digit code which appears on the operator’s network whenever a call is made.  Primary reason for this decision on the part of Indian Government is to restrict militant activities.

Some Market estimates suggest there are around 25 million phones without code. Unbranded Phones account for 30% of all sales in India. People choose unbranded phones because they are available cheap mostly imported from China.

Now, What would happen to these millions of subscribers? Subscribers who would have bought these phones for genuine reasons would suffer in this fresh move.

What would be the alternatives?

1. Either the Cell Phone Operators should work out a Plan B to assign these unique numbers to all these unbranded phones

2. Or all these Unbranded phone subscribers should go buy new phones

Indian Cell Phone market is the faster growing Cell Phone market in the world with millions of subscribers add to the growing list. It is natural that it becomes a herculean task for the Government to keep track of these millions of Cell Phones unless some mechanism like these unique numbers recognition exist.
